Gary Caldwell Hails Reggie Walsh's Wigan Athletic Debut
Wigan Athletic manager Gary Caldwell has praised Reggie Walsh's impressive debut performance, saying he was 'one of our biggest threats in the game'. The 17-year-old was signed from Chelsea in the week and was thrown straight into the centre of midfield alongside captain Max Power.
The youngster responded with a man-of-the-match performance, which would have included his first goal for the club - a superb volley from just inside the penalty area - but for an offside flag. Caldwell admitted that he considered taking Walsh off during the game, but he was playing too well.
"I said it to you guys (the media) last week, I see him in training...and you don't want to get too excited...and I still don't want to get too excited," said Caldwell. "For a 17-year-old kid to play with that understanding, quality, physicality…we thought about taking him off, but he kept doing things that were impressive."
On the 'goal' that would have added icing to the cake, Caldwell added: "As the ball dropped to him, from a great height, on his weaker foot, he showed the quality he has with the strike. And I thought if that had gone in, it would have been no more than we deserved, because in the first half we were excellent."
Caldwell also explained his reasoning behind throwing Walsh in from the start, with Luke Harris - who arrived on a season-long loan from Fulham the day before the game - coming on as a second-half substitute.
"The thing is, we can't bed these guys in, we need to win games, and we need to win games quickly," added Caldwell. "I've told the lads we have to prepare to win more, and that starts now. The biggest thing for me - and I've told them this - is we have to prepare better, so when the next game comes around we are ready."
