Sam Morsy has completed a free transfer to Blackburn Rovers, ending his association with Wigan Athletic. The 34-year-old midfielder, who played a key role in Wigan Athletic's promotions and was named Player of the Year in 2019/20, now joins his eighth English club. Morsy's move comes as Wigan Athletic prepare for the new League One season after finishing 16th last term with 56 points (14W-14D-18L), scoring 49 goals and conceding 58 (-9 goal difference), leaving them 47 points behind leaders Lincoln.
What did Morsy say about the move?
Morsy expressed his excitement about joining Blackburn Rovers, citing his family connections to the area. 'I know a lot about the club because my mother was born here, and my grandparents and uncles are all from here,' he said. 'I’ve played against Blackburn on many occasions. It’s a great club with an exciting project and a good manager, so I can’t wait to get started.'
What is Morsy’s career background?
Morsy began his professional career at Port Vale in 2009 before moving to Chesterfield, Wigan Athletic, and Middlesbrough. At Wigan Athletic, he earned two promotions and was named the club’s Player of the Year for the 2019/20 season. He later joined Ipswich Town in 2021, where he captained the team to successive promotions and featured prominently in their 2024 Premier League campaign, making 33 top-flight appearances before moving to Kuwait SC last summer.
What does this mean for Wigan Athletic?
Morsy’s departure leaves Wigan Athletic without one of their most experienced midfielders. The club, which finished 16th in League One last season, will need to find a replacement to bolster their squad. With the new season approaching, Wigan Athletic will be looking to improve on their recent form (LLDWW) and climb the table.
