Wigan Athletic Lose Talented Forward to Chelsea ## What happened? Harrison Bettoni, an 18-year-old Wigan Athletic academy product, has officially left the club to join Chelsea on a long-term deal. The two clubs have agreed on a 'significant' compensation fee, with Latics stating that they made every possible effort to retain Bettoni. ## Why it matters for Wigan Athletic The highly-rated forward was offered multiple long-term contracts to remain at the Brick Community Stadium, but the lure of moving to the Premier League led to Bettoni deciding that his future lay elsewhere. Bettoni enjoyed a breakthrough season at senior level last term, making 27 appearances in total, scoring three goals while operating as an attacking midfielder and striker. ## What comes next? Bettoni will now enter the next chapter of his career with Chelsea, having signed a long-term contract with the Blues until 2030. The Tameside-born forward scored further goals in the away victories at Burton Albion and Preston North End, ending the campaign with 27 senior appearances to his name. Bettoni progressed through the youth ranks at Latics, captaining the Under-16s to the Professional Development League Cup for the first time in the club’s history. Having earned his professional contract in the summer of 2024, Bettoni played in all three of Latics’ EFL Trophy Group Stage fixtures at the start of the 2025/26 season, before bursting onto the League One scene with a dream league debut against AFC Wimbledon, scoring a match-winning double, including a free-kick with his very first touch. The club would like to thank Harrison for his efforts and wish him all the best for the future.
