Wigan Athletic earned a key point in their fight against relegation with a 0-0 draw away at Mansfield Town this week. The result at the Brick Community Stadium extends the Latics' unbeaten run to two matches as they battle to climb out of the League One drop zone.

Manager Nigel Clough made three changes to his starting line-up, bringing in Elliott Hewitt, Kyle Knoyle and Rhys Oates. The tactical shuffle generated early pressure, with Oates forcing a save from Mansfield goalkeeper Joe Whitworth inside the opening 20 minutes. At the other end, Wigan's Bradley Burrowes had a clear opportunity but shot straight at home keeper Liam Roberts.

Both defences held firm throughout a tight contest. Mansfield's Jon Russell fired a big chance over the bar midway through the first half, while Wigan's Michael Smith saw a close-range header comfortably gathered by Whitworth just before the interval. The pattern continued after the break, with George Maris denied at close range for the hosts and Kyle Knoyle making a vital block to stop a Wigan counter-attack late on. The game saw a concerning moment for the visitors when Scott Hogan was forced off after a heavy knock, replaced by Christian Saydee.

Nigel Clough acknowledged the importance of the point for his side's predicament. "It was a big point for Wigan, who are relying on any positive results to hoist them out of the relegation zone," the manager said. He noted the team's defensive work, particularly in the final minutes, was key to securing a result that keeps them in touch with the teams above.

The draw leaves Wigan Athletic 21st in the League One table with 10 points from 13 matches, still deep in the relegation battle. Their recent form shows one win, one draw and three losses from the last five games. They now face a key home fixture against fellow strugglers Barnsley, who are 23rd, on 14 November. The team will need to build on this defensive resilience, having scored 11 goals while conceding 22 so far this season, and will hope the knock to Scott Hogan does not add to their injury list.
