Wigan Athletic's defeat to Wycombe Wanderers has sent them back to the bottom of League One. Dan Casey scored the only goal of the game with 22 minutes remaining, securing a 1-0 win for the visitors at the DW Stadium.
The match began with tributes to Wigan's goalkeeping coach Kevin Miller, who died at the age of 57. A minute's applause was held before kick-off and Wycombe's Jayden Wareham placed a wreath behind one of the goals. Miller had an 18-year playing career featuring over 700 appearances for clubs including Crystal Palace and Watford, and had been at Exeter City as a coach for over three years. Wigan Athletic said in a statement. Wycombe Wanderers responded: "We send our deepest condolences."
On the pitch, Cauley Woodrow created the opening for Casey's decisive 68th-minute strike. Wigan pushed for an equaliser, making five attacking substitutions in the second half. Connor Barrett had a shot that cleared the bar, and Fraser Murray went down in the area but no penalty was given.
The result leaves Wigan 24th in League One with just four points from seven games. Their recent form reads two wins, one draw and two defeats from the last five. They must now regroup for their next fixture, a home game against 17th-placed Mansfield Town on 3 October.
