Former Wigan Athletic striker Will Grigg has joined National League side Forest Green Rovers on a free transfer. The 35-year-old left League Two Chesterfield after making only three appearances for the club this season.
Grigg's move ends his second stint with the Spireites, where he scored 42 goals in 118 total appearances. He had returned to Chesterfield in the summer of 2023 after his time with Wigan.
Grigg is a significant figure in Wigan Athletic's modern history. He twice won promotion from League One with the club between 2015 and 2019. His most famous moment came in 2018 when he scored the only goal in Wigan's FA Cup fifth-round victory over Manchester City, a strike described as one of the most memorable of his career. His total English Football League appearances now exceed 500, with Wigan among his key clubs.
Paul Cook, who managed Wigan when Grigg was sold to Sunderland for a reported £4 million in January 2019, previously praised the striker's impact. "He has been absolutely outstanding for us at this football club for three years in everything that we’ve done," Cook said.
The news comes as Wigan Athletic continue to struggle in League One this season. The Latics are currently 24th in the table with just seven points from 11 games, having lost their last two matches against Huddersfield and Oxford United. They are 18 points behind the leaders and face a tough trip to 13th-placed Leicester on Tuesday. Their record of two wins and a draw from 11 games is the worst in the division, with eight goals scored and 17 conceded. Their recent form over the last five games shows two wins and three defeats, but they have lost their last two, falling 2-1 at Huddersfield on Saturday 24 October and 2-1 at Oxford United on Tuesday 20 October. Christian Saydee scored their consolation goal in both those defeats, and he is the club's top scorer this season. Before those losses, they had beaten Reading 1-0 on Saturday 17 October.
Grigg's departure from the EFL highlights the changing landscape for a player who was once a central figure in Wigan's successes. Forest Green Rovers, who are 16th in the National League with 15 points from 12 matches, will hope his experience can boost their campaign. Wigan's immediate focus is on halting their slide, with their next chance coming at the King Power Stadium against Leicester on Tuesday 27 October.
