Wigan Athletic’s Recruitment Efforts Continue
Gary Caldwell, manager of Wigan Athletic, provided an update on the club's recruitment efforts during a post-match press conference following Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Grimsby Town. With only one month left in the summer transfer window, Caldwell acknowledged that the team is still working to strengthen their squad.
Caldwell stated: 'We're working hard to bring people in. When that happens, some days you think it's miles off, some days you think it's very close, and it becomes miles off. It just is what it is.' He added, 'It's this part of the season where you are trying to constantly improve the squad and make it better, and I think it's clear we have to make the depth of the squad better.'
Financial Restrictions and Squad Depth
The Wigan Athletic boss recognized that the current group lacks the depth needed to compete at the top end of League One. Caldwell emphasized the importance of ensuring a more competitive squad by the transfer window's close on September 1, while also stressing the need for financial prudence.
Caldwell mentioned that five players were initially made available for transfer following last season: Joseph Hungbo, Baba Adeeko, Jonny Smith, Ronan Darcy, and Maleace Asamoah. However, all of these players remain at the club, with Asamoah on loan to Shamrock Rovers in Ireland.
Caldwell explained that his priority is adding depth across the board: 'We’re clear on the type of players we want, the profile of players that we want, we’re very clear on that. Like I said, we’re working on two or three at the moment, that if we get them in, then the squad will be much better.'
Preparations for League One Season
Wigan Athletic's competitive campaign begins with a trip to Barnsley in the Carabao Cup first round. Caldwell remains optimistic about improving the squad's depth and ensuring they are well-prepared for the upcoming season, despite the challenges of financial restrictions and potential player departures.
