Wigan Athletic's Injury Report: Perkins Ready to Return
Gary Caldwell has given an update on the injury situation within Wigan Athletic ahead of their upcoming match against Grimsby Town. Striker Sonny Perkins is available for selection after missing last weekend's game as a precaution due to discomfort in his quad muscle.
Caldwell confirmed that Perkins was withdrawn from training before the match against AFC Fylde but has since recovered and could play a full 90 minutes. The manager stated, 'Sonny's fine. Last week was just a precaution. He desperately wanted to train on Friday, but he just felt his quad. I think it was a really good decision by the medical team to pull him out of training.'
Christian Saydee and Other Updates
Christian Saydee remains sidelined with a calf injury, which is more serious than initially thought, and will miss the start of the season.
The club also provided an update on Llyton Chapman, who made his first appearance since April in the goalless draw against Southport. Chapman played the opening 45 minutes at Haig Avenue, taking a step forward in his recovery after a lengthy absence. Caldwell expressed optimism about Chapman's return to form: 'It's brilliant for him. He's worked extremely hard in the off-season and he was a massive boost for us at the back end of last season when he came into the team.'
Ahead of kick-off, Wigan Athletic also offered support to trialist Nico Lawrence who sustained a severe injury during a friendly match against AFC Fylde. The managing director, Sarah Guilfoyle, wrote in her board bulletin: 'We would like to again send our best wishes to Nico Lawrence. Nico has been on trial with the football club since the start of July and sadly sustained a severe injury whilst playing at Mill Farm last weekend. Nico is back home with his family and ready to undertake the road to recovery.'
The club thanked the medical staff, North West Ambulance Service, and Royal Preston Hospital for their swift actions during the incident.
