Wigan Athletic's Quest for a Young Talent
League One side Wigan Athletic are leading the race to secure a loan move for 17-year-old Chelsea midfielder Reggie Walsh. The young player, who has been part of Chelsea’s Cobham academy since his youth, is expected to gain valuable experience at the Latics after making only limited appearances in senior matches so far.
Walsh was given his debut during a Europa Conference League semi-final first leg against Djurgarden in May 2025 and played the entirety of the second leg. He also made two further appearances for Chelsea last season, but has yet to feature in the Premier League. Despite his limited experience at the top level, Walsh is highly rated by those at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea's Decision to Loan Out Walsh
Chelsea’s management team sees this move as an opportunity for Walsh to progress and gain more playing time. The club is aware that several Championship and third-tier clubs are interested in signing the young midfielder, but Wigan Athletic appears to be in a strong position to secure his services.
Walsh's contract with Chelsea runs until the end of the 2027/28 season, making this loan move an attractive option for both parties. The teenager is expected to spend the upcoming campaign at Wigan, where he can develop his skills and gain more first-team experience under Roberto De Zerbi’s guidance.
The move would not only provide Walsh with a platform to showcase his talents but also strengthen Wigan Athletic's midfield options in League One.
